I am usually thankful for things that I am aware that I have received, even if some time has passed after that, perhaps because of forgetfulness or because the opportunity was not given. However, I have thought about this issue: can I be grateful for something I don't know I have received? What would you answer? Let me talk about how I arrived at this point and why it might give us a way to express gratitude. And finally, let me enunciate a second way of demonstrating that beautiful quality.

I recently heard a friend thank a friend for the food before we ate it together. In his prayer he mentioned that he was thankful even for what he may have received from God and he was not aware of it. I hadn't thought about that until that moment. How many things could I be receiving without being aware of it? Could I even be receiving more things without realizing it than I am knowingly receiving? It is possible. And food is one of the things that might best reflect this fact.
I can have a delicious fruit salad on my table. Perhaps one could even grow it in one's own backyard. But to what degree am I doing what is necessary to grow that fruit? I think about what is happening that escapes my physical eyes. I think about the photosynthesis that is taking place daily in that plant, which is bringing it to an optimal state to be able to bear fruit. Was it me who designed it, carried it out and executed it? I do little (to say nothing, except making sure that I have sown the seed in a place where it gets enough sun). On the other hand, how can I collaborate with the water cycle that it constantly executes? What plants and fruits need is naturally processed and treated by the well-designed water cycle. This happens daily and invisibly. What would happen to me if it did not exist? And I only water the plant a few days a week.
There is no doubt: it is reasonable to be grateful even for those things that I do not perceive with the naked eye. It is not unreasonable to think that in reality we do only part of what is necessary for us to obtain certain achievements. True, we have to do something, things will hardly come automatically from heaven, but the point is that sometimes we cannot take all the credit for what we achieve.
And it is possible that showing gratitude for these things that we receive and help us to accomplish our goals will lead us to one more quality: humility. We will hardly ever conclude that we are the best in the world. True, we have a certain degree of merit, but there will also be a certain degree of "help" that we receive. This balanced viewpoint will surely help our healthy self-esteem.
Can we talk about another way of showing gratitude?
Yes: avoid wasting what we are given. We can't imagine receiving a large sum of cash and then going down the street throwing them all to the wind, can we? Well, if that sounded like a good idea, please call me before you do.
However, that happens with other things and gifts. And I think two of the reasons it happens is that they are free and plentiful. For example, I have visited some places where water is abundant, constant and free. It's sad how some of the locals make little effort to fix the big and small water cans. It is sad that the soles of your shoes get wet with this crystalline water that runs without control, and jump authentic "rivulets" of the vital liquid because some think it is the best so that the water pressure does not break the pipes inside the houses.
I am glad to have understood things like this without expecting to live in places where you pay for every liter of water in the faucet, and thus conscientiously attend to every leak, because every drop will hit my pocket; before having a vehicle where much importance is given to the economy of engine oil and fuel, and everything is hermetically sealed and there is no leakage, and not because I want to preserve the environment by emitting less smoke, but because it would be a drain on my family budget.
Can I be sure that I am grateful if I squander what I am given? Hardly. So the logical conclusion is: I show gratitude when I am someone who puts what I receive to good use, avoids wasting it and does not forget to benefit others with it.
I am grateful for having paid attention to my friend's sincere words, preventing my stomach from preventing me from benefiting from this pearl of gratitude. In addition, I want to reinforce the responsible sense that I have been trying to implement for some time now, decreasing waste, no matter that what I have cost me nothing. I want to continue to show gratitude, and not take some things for granted. Now, does being aware that I receive things without realizing it make me more grateful? Maybe it does...
