Near-term Potential for Zcash Upward Trajectory

With the groundwork for the Sapling network upgrade in place, Zcash is looking to add some important features that will bolster its privacy technology, and might also drive user adoption. Currently, a machine with 4GB of RAM is necessary in order to partake in a shielded transaction on the Zcash network.

A shielded transaction is just like a transaction on the Bitcoin network (from party A to party B), except that the sender, receiver, and amount are encrypted and private; Bitcoin's blockchain leaves those open to the public. Once the new Sapling network upgrade is complete later this year, the 4GB RAM requirement for shielded transactions will be lifted, and it will become possible for mobile wallets (and merchants) to utilize shielded transactions more easily.

There have been talks of Zcash being added to Coinbase on various user forums, but I have been unable to substantiate them beyond the level of rumor. Now that Bitmain is producing ASIC machines that mine the Equihash algorithm (Zcash being the "name brand" in the space), I think these factors wrapped into a burrito make for a very profitable flavor.

It remains to be seen whether the development team will seek to make shielded transactions the default option for the Zcash network, or if transparent addresses will remain a part of the ecosystem. In either case, lowering the requirements for shielded transactions and addressing should contribute to the private transaction pool's size, and its ability to provide privacy to its users.
