I was waiting for my class to begin after recess when my attention was caught by Grade 7 male students who were playing badminton intensely in the open area. As I watched closely I saw that they were not using the proper badminton racket and the shuttle cocks they were using were actually used shuttle cocks from the school’s official badminton team.

They amused me, these kids, very typical of Filipinos. They do not have they real ones but that lack does not stop them from trying, from wanting to have fun. The lack makes them think, makes them imagine, and motivates them to find things they can find in the thrash and use it.

I went near and up close to talk to them. I saw their potential. I told them they can join next year for badminton so they can have access to the real rackets. They told me they could have joined this year but they didn’t know the sports team was inviting students to try out. They were happy being noticed and even did a little exhibition game for me. They were good already. They only need the proper training, and oh yeah, the proper badminton rackets and good shuttle cocks.
That’s Filipino youth! That’s the spirit!
