STEPS TO FEND OFF AN ATTACKER (SELF DEFENCE)...

From the dictionary definition, self defence is the defence of one's person or interests, especially through the use of physical force, which is permitted in certain cases as an answer to a charge of violent crime.

It is a depressing but true fact that a lot of women feel afraid when walking the streets alone at night. All you have to do is ask around to realise just how many of us are fed-up with walking home clutching our keys between our fingers.

Unfortunately, no one can offer you a guarantee that you will never, at some point in your life, find yourself in a situation where you may be forced to defend yourself. Whether it be from an assailant who tries to attack you to get money, personal property or someone who attempts to perpetrate a sexual assault or worse, a confrontation could happen, and you would certainly benefit from learning defense techniques to use in dangerous situations.

Basically, women don't have the confidence they should in life let alone in defence, Learning to fend off an attacker can not only help women to have peace of mind when walking alone, but also increase confidence, independence and a general sense of achievement.

Finally, it is important to be aware that you can be criminally assaulted without ever seeing the face or being in the presence of your assailant.

So, to be able to fend off an attacker, here are the steps:

1. Open your hands and keep them in front of you in a pleading position when confronted by a potential attacker. Clenched fists give away your readiness to strike. Open hands present a non-threatening appearance that will cause an attacker to let his guard down, while still leaving you the options to suddenly strike or grab.

2. Scream. Screaming may draw attention and scare the attacker away.

3. Block or dodge an oncoming attack. What use is any other defense tactic if you get knocked out?

4. Aim for sensitive areas such as face, stomach, groin, knee, shin and instep. These areas are easy to hit and will probably knock the enemy down for your chance to escape. Remember that a heavy strike to a person's face is highly effective at making them lose their senses. A broken nose or strike to the eyes will greatly hinder your opponent's ability to observe and react. Do not strike a person in the mouth, this will damage your hand.

5. If necessary, use any hard item available to poke, jab or scratch your assailant's face: a stick, a brick, a pen, a piece of glass, etc. The eyes and throat are especially vulnerable areas.

6. NEVER kick your attacker in the groin, this gives them a chance to grab hold of your leg. Instead, use your knee repeatedly.

7. Using the heel of your palm, hit the attacker's nose upwards. Not only could this cause their nose to bleed, but it will cause their eyes to water, giving you a chance of escape.

8. Once you have taken your attacker down and they are no longer a threat, stop attacking. Kicking the jaw off of an unconscious person isn't self defense, it's a lack of self control.

9. Call police once your attacker is no longer a threat.
