Uruguay Pip Salah-less Egypt on Sallah Day

Uruguay have Joe Gimenez to thank for his late winner as they opened their World Cup account with a 1-0 victory over the Pharaohs of Egypt.

Egypt started the game without their star man, Mohammed Salah who was not deemed fit enough to start the game and they definitely gave good account of themselves throughout the duration of the game.

Luis Suarez was a culprit as he spurn many chances to give Uruguay the lead and perhaps, kill the game early on but was wasteful in front of goal, not understating the outstanding heroics of Egyptian goalkeeper, El-Shenawy.

The young goalkeeper was picked ahead of veteran and oldest player at this year's tournament, Hassam El-Hadary. He also kept Egypt in the game showing great reflex to deny Edison Cavani from just after the 18-yard box, after the PSG striker was teed up by a header from Luis Suarez towards the dying minutes of the game.

Just when Egypt thought they would share the spoils and earn at least a point for the first time in their last five World Cup games they conceded a clumsy late foul which saw Carlos Sanchez's cross from the resulting free-kick met by Atletico Madrid defender, Jose Gimenez with a thumping header past El-Shenawy in post to send the Uruguayans into wild jubilation.
