Will Smith cost himself over 250 million dollars.

350 million dollars is his reported net worth.
40 million dollars is his income.
100 million was his biggest payday ever, for Men in Black 3.

Before the Oscars, Will Smith was on track to become one of very few actors to reach billionaire status and had deals with almost everyone.

A multi picture contract with Netflix.
Apple & Netflix were in a bidding war to make a biopic on him, which was rumored to be worth over 50 million in payment.
Paramount Plus was letting him produce several shows alongside his Fresh Prince reboot Bel Air, which one had JoJo Siwa in, where she dropped out.

There were five years of projects in the pipeline, which almost all of them have ended and very few were going to require actual work outside of projection.

Looking at it, it all really happened with King Richard.

King Richard cost 50 million dollars to make.

The largest expense being Will Smith’s salary, where it was reported it was the majority of the budget, being anywhere from 25-40 million dollars.

The movie was not a success with the box office, bringing in 38 million dollars.

Box office split was likely 50%.

That cuts it to 19 million actually made.

Also, the general rule is whatever the budget is, marketing is 50% of that, meaning the real cost was 75 million.

That puts King Richard at a loss of 56 million dollars.

Which obviously there are ways studios can recover this.

Merchandise, which this film doesn’t seem likely to have much potential on.
TV/Blue Ray residuals, which are declining.
Selling streaming rights, which while the slap likely gives this movie a bump, likely nothing noticeable.

Winning an Oscar is obviously a prestigious thing, but Will Smith was there for a box office loser, which at the end of the day the award really wasn’t worth the career damage.

For Chris Rock on the other hand, he sold in 24 hours, what he previously sold in the last 30 days for comedy ticket sales.

It’s also expected Netflix and other groups are bidding for Chris Rock to do another stand up comedy show, where it could break records for payment.

All said and done, while I obviously have a huge respect for Will Smith and hope/think his career recovers, it really shows how much damage 10 seconds can do.
