We all know that the question about whether or not there is life out there in the universe is one of the biggest ones we have. It is something that we humans have been wondering about for millennia.
Although it is statistically impossible, or at least improbable that we are the only lifeform in the whole wide universe, we still haven't found evidence of one despite our best efforts. Maybe in the future, we will finally have some answers.
Or will we? Are we sure that we are even looking in the right place? Of course, on first thought, one would say that what else is there beyond the universe. Isn't it supposed to be everything that there is?
Well, how about higher dimensions? Several theories show that higher dimensions are possible and what if life exists in those higher dimensions? If that sounds familiar to you, it might be because this idea was alluded to in the movie Interstellar.
Higher Dimensional Life
Much has been written and shown about inter-dimensional beings in novels and movies but it's also interesting to think about whether this can happen in the real world. I know this isn't exactly science and is more of a thought experiment but it's cool regardless.
We live in a three-dimensional universe with a 4th dimension of time. But according to superstring theory, spacetime is 10 dimensional and in M-theory, it is 11 dimensional. So, is it possible that life could exist in one or all of these higher dimensions?
Of course, if it is even remotely possible, life in these higher dimensions would be so different than ours that we wouldn't even be sure whether or not to call them life. It could be that life exists as a pure form of energy or in some other non-physical form!
Maybe that's why we don't understand 'ghosts' yet. Could it be that ghosts or spirits are simply energy forms that exist in higher dimensions that seldom interact with our own dimension?
If one day we do in fact get evidence of life in higher dimensions, it sure would be ultraterrestrial and not extraterrestrial. What a discovery that would be!!
