Wednesday Walk to Arbor Low and Gib Hill in Derbyshire, UK

We've been to Arbor Low before but my brother has a new camera, so we made a return trip so he could get better photos.

Arbor Low is a Neolithic henge stone circle in the middle of a farmer's field. At the entrance to the farm, we paid a £1 a person to enter, as it's on private land. The stone circle is just approximately 300 metres from the farm.

The bank, ditch and the circle of some 50 fallen white limestone slabs, surrounds a stone ‘cove’. Closeby is Gib Hill, which is thought to be a large burial mound.

In the 19th century, excavations took place at the mound by Derbyshire antiquarian Thomas Bateman who found human remains with a pottery vessel, stone tools including flint.

A walk around a farmer's field couldn't have been more interesting.
