Volunteerism - Mechanics with @article61 - Electric Power-Steering & ABS faults

Looks like you're in for a bit of a lesson in ABS systems, in today's video.

So sit back and get ready to learn a trick or two.

Turns out that the steering fault this vehicle has, was caused by the Battery! After I had set my charger to its repair function and left it charging all night long, I came to find it had only managed to charge to a maximum of 60% power. The voltage reads 12.4V, which is a good reading, but once I set the charger onto its test functions, the problem became clear. This Battery was like a punched out boxer, with a good Poker-face. Looks OK, but after one swing there is nothing else to give! Out on its feet...

Metaphors aside, this is a serious problem for any car. With a battery like this, running on its own fumes, those quick trips to the shop with your lights and radio on, will begin to drain the battery faster than the alternator can recharge it. This may eventually lead to a faulty alternator and an extra expense
(One that could have been avoided for the sake of a battery test).

In the case of this particular car, it is the battery that has thrown in the towel. Almost totally drained, this has then led to a lower voltage/amperage being supplied to all electrical components. Unfortunately, for anyone who owns a VW Polo of this age, this causes the car to instantly lose all its power-steering and its blooming brakes!!!
(You should have seen the look on my face when I found that out!)

So a pretty serious breakdown, don't you think? And certainly one that should activate your engine management warning light. Oh if only cars were that simple...

Not one peep from the engine management system and the Only warning Lt that came up was an ABS light. Watch the video below to see how this job turned out. As a bonus you will also learn how your ABS system works too :)
