UAE files WTO complaint over Qatar goods ban

The United Arab Emirates said Tuesday it had registered a complaint to the World Trade Organization after Qatar prohibited UAE goods, the most recent escalation in hostilities between the Gulf neighbors.

An official announcement carried by the state-run WAM news agency said Qatar was in"flagrant violation" of WTO principles, after Doha had sought WTO mediation over a blockade enforced from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt at June 2017.

The UAE and its allies have accused Doha of encouraging the Islamist extremists and Shiite Iran, Saudi Arabia's most important rival.

In May, Qatar ordered all stores to eliminate goods coming from the four Arab nations in retaliation from the boycott.

Qatar registered a complaint to the WTO in August 2017 stating that it had been the victim of an"illegal siege" committed from the Saudi-led bloc.

The four Arab countries' measures include diplomatic and trade boycotts on Qatar, which accuses Riyadh and its allies of trying regime change from Doha.

The row has driven isolated Qatar, which formerly relied upon its Gulf neighbors for much-needed imports, to search elsewhere for food goods, such as Turkey, Morocco and Iran.
