The Vltava River flows past the Czech capital, Prague. This is the longest river in the country, stretching for 446 km. It flows into the Elbe, which, in turn, flows into the North Sea.

In Prague, the Vltava is crossed by 18 bridges, including the world-famous Charles Bridge. To protect against ice drift in front of the bridge piers, special fences made of large logs were built, which are willingly used as a seat by numerous seagulls.

This is a very important element, for example, in 1784 the ice blocked the openings of the bridge and the latter turned into a kind of platinum. Water flowed everywhere in the bridge, which severely damaged it. Then five soldiers standing on the bridge were killed. Since then, protective oak structures protect the ancient Charles Bridge. They also successfully performed this function during the arrival of the centenary water in 2002.
