[TV Discovery] The Terror

The Terror is an American television series that premiered on AMC back in March, based upon the 2007 best-selling novel of the same name by Dan Simmons. The story follows the crew of a Royal Naval expedition searching for the Arctic's treacherous Northwest Passage, but happen upon a dreadful and elusive beast. David Kajganich and Soo Hugh serve as co-showrunners, while Kajganich penned the adaptation and Ridley Scott, Alexandra Milchan, Scott Lambert, David W. Zucker, and Guymon Casady are executive producers. It was Ridley Scott's name on the project that made me want to watch this as soon as I possibly could, as I'm a big fan of his. As usual, I'll keep this post as spoiler free as possible.

After the success of The Walking Dead, AMC wanted to do another big horror show and so they ordered 10 episodes of The Terror based upon the novel of the same name. The story is based upon the real life lost Franklin expedition which vanished in 1853, with the real life story being just as captivating as the dramatised horror show.

The real terror plaguing the expedition in the show isn't really the beast, but a combination of the harsh conditions of the Arctic territories as well as man itself, or at least that's my takeaway from it. From the first episode to the last, the bleak arctic tundra is the most threatening thing about the show. Don't get me wrong, the beast is very well done, which is a massive accomplishment in and of itself, as a CGI monster could easily have ended up looking like something from Monsters Inc or a 90s Coca-Cola advert.

It's hard to discuss this show any further without going into too much detail, so I'll leave it there with a strong recommendation that you give it a go. If you're interested in the real story of the Lost Franklin Expedition, I highly recommend a video by a favourite YouTuber of mine, Zepherus. You can find it here. Have you started watching The Terror? Or is there another Horror-based show that's got your attention at the moment?
