Hola, mis amigos de worldmappin. Que placer saludarlos nuevamente y regresar para seguir mostrando las maravillas de La Habana. Muchas veces he visitado el sitio que hoy les traigo, sin embargo, nunca dejo de admirarlo porque es un lugar especial. El Parque de la Fraternidad no es un parque cualquiera, sino mas bien un parque compuesto por varios parques que ocupan un área bastante extensa entre las calles Monte y Dragones, en la Habana Vieja. Es un espacio cargado de simbolismo en el verdadero corazón de La Habana. >Hello, my friends from Worldmappin. Fraternity Park is not just any park; rather, it's a park made up of several parks that occupy a fairly large area between Monte and Dragones streets in Old Havana. It's a space loaded with symbolism in the true heart of Havana.

Para que se ubiquen, esto queda al final del Paseo del Prado, pegadito al Capitolio. Pero no te confíes con lo que ves en las postales. Caminar por allí y sus alrededores es como meterse en un avispero, en el ojo del huracán, hay un runrún de fondo todo el tiempo y hasta sacar el teléfono para tomar fotos puede ser peligroso. >To give you your bearings, this is located at the end of the Paseo del Prado, right next to the Capitol. But don't trust what you see in the postcards. Walking around there and its surroundings is like stepping into a hornet's nest, into the eye of the hurricane; there's a constant buzzing in the background, and even taking out your phone to take photos can be dangerous.

Si hay un lugar en La Habana que nunca duerme y lo tiene todo, ese es el Parque de la Fraternidad. Rodeado de vendedores. No esperes encontrar la calma de un jardín japonés ni el silencio de una biblioteca. Esto, es otra cosa. Este parque es el termómetro de la capital, el punto de encuentro donde la historia se sienta en el mismo banco que la locura del día a día. En las noches es otro punto frecuentado por travestis. >If there's one place in Havana that never sleeps and has it all, it's Fraternity Park. Surrounded by vendors. Don't expect to find the calm of a Japanese garden or the silence of a library. This is something else entirely. This park is the thermometer of the capital, the meeting point where history sits on the same bench as daily madness. At night, it's another spot frequented by transvestites.

Como dato curioso les cuento que originalmente este sitio fue el Campo de Marte, un espacio usado para ejercicios militares y eventos populares, como el famoso ascenso del globo de Matías Pérez, aquel que voló y nunca más apareció. Todo un misterio. De ese peculiar evento salió una frase popular cubana que dice, "Voló como Matías Pérez". Utilizada para hacer notar que alguien se fue, o desapareció. >As a curious fact, I'll tell you that originally this site was the Campo de Marte, an area used for military exercises and public events, like the famous ascent of Matías Pérez's balloon — the man who flew away and never returned. Quite a mystery. From that peculiar event came a popular Cuban saying: "He flew off like Matías Pérez," used to point out that someone left or disappeared.

En 1928, luego de una Conferencia Panamericana, se transformó en lo que es hoy. De ahí el nombre de Parque de la Fraternidad. El parque, en su conjunto, está lleno de ceibas, pero la principal es el llamado Árbol de la Fraternidad. Una ceiba plantada en el centro del parque que es el corazón simbólico del lugar. Esta ceiba está rodeada de una cerca circular de barrotes de hierro y en su parte superior, por todo el redondel, hay frase de nuestro José Martí que dice: “Es la hora del recuento y de la marcha unida y hemos de andar en cuadro apretado como la plata en las raíces de los Andes.” Para darle un sentido de unión continental, esta ceiba fue abonada con tierra traída de cada uno de los países de América. Bonito el detalle, ¿no? >In 1928, after a Pan-American Conference, it was transformed into what it is today. Hence the name Fraternity Park. The park as a whole is full of ceiba trees, but the main one is the so-called Tree of Fraternity. A ceiba planted in the center of the park that is the symbolic heart of the place. This ceiba is surrounded by a circular iron railing, and along the top of the circle is a phrase by our José Martí that reads: > >"It is the hour of reckoning and of united march, and we must walk in tight formation like silver in the roots of the Andes." > >To give it a sense of continental unity, this ceiba was fertilized with soil brought from every country in the Americas. A nice touch, don't you think?

Hoy el parque es más famoso por ser la terminal de taxis informal más grande de la ciudad. Es el reino de las piqueras y los buquenques. ¿Que qué es eso? Fácil, son los muchachos que se pasan el día gritando destinos para llenar los almendrones (los carros viejos americanos). Escucharás cosas como: "¡Boyeros, Santiago de las Vegas! o "¡La Lisa, Marianao!". Es un caos organizado donde la ley es la necesidad y la supervivencia diaria. >Today, the park is more famous for being the city's largest informal taxi terminal. It's the kingdom of the "piqueras" and "buquenques." What's that? Easy — they're the guys who spend the day shouting destinations to fill up the "almendrones" (old American cars). You'll hear things like: "¡Boyeros, Santiago de las Vegas!" or "¡La Lisa, Marianao!" It's an organized chaos where the law is necessity and daily survival.

A pesar del "relajo", el parque también tiene su lado culto. Está lleno de bustos de próceres latinoamericanos. Entre ellos están Simón Bolívar, Benito Juárez, José Martí, Alejandro de Humboldt, Santiago Ramón y Cajal, José de San Martín y hasta hsy un busto de Abraham Lincon. Todo un museo al aire libre. >Despite the ruckus, the park also has its cultured side. It's full of busts of Latin American heroes. Among them are Simón Bolívar, Benito Juárez, José Martí, Alexander von Humboldt, Santiago Ramón y Cajal, José de San Martín, and there's even a bust of Abraham Lincoln. A true open-air museum.

Al caminar por alli, pude ver los grandes bancos de piedra, testigos del paso del tiempo, de las épocas, de la vida real, de un viejo jugando dominó, del carretillero cansado, de la gente con las bolsas del mercado, y todo el mundo quejándose del calor o de la espera. También hay muchos árboles llenos de flores como el framboyan y también hay palmas reales. >As I walked there, I could see the large stone benches, witnesses to the passage of time, to eras, to real life: an old man playing dominoes, a tired street vendor pushing his cart, people with market bags, and everyone complaining about the heat or the wait. There are also many trees full of flowers, such as the flamboyant tree, as well as royal palms.

Si eres turista y quieres una foto que capture el sentir, el latido auténtico de La Habana, el de verdad, el sin filtros, tienes que venir aquí. Es un lugar ruidoso, un poco descuidado a veces, pero lleno de una energía que no encuentras en ningún otro lado. El Parque de la Fraternidad es un punto de encuentro y conexión de transportes, rodeado de sitios especiales como el Capitolio, la entrada del barrio Chino, el Hotel Saratoga, la Fuente de la India y el Palacio de Computación. El Parque de la Fraternidad es La Habana en estado puro, un poco rota, un poco sucia, un poco olvidada, pero bien viva. >If you're a tourist and want a photo that captures the feeling, the authentic heartbeat of Havana — the real one, with no filters — you have to come here. It's a noisy place, a bit unkempt at times, but full of an energy you won't find anywhere else. Fraternity Park is a meeting point and transport hub, surrounded by special sites like the Capitol, the entrance to Chinatown, the Saratoga Hotel, the Fuente de la India (India Fountain), and the Palacio de Computación. Fraternity Park is Havana in its pure state: a little broken, a little dirty, a little forgotten, but very much alive.
