***This is the Errázuriz Alvear Palace, one of Buenos Aires' most elegant mansions, located on Avenida del Libertador in the Recoleta neighborhood. It was designed in 1911 by French architects in a French style. Today, it houses the National Museum of Decorative Arts, which exhibits collections of furniture, paintings, sculptures, and European art objects. Admission to the museum is free, and a visit is always a pleasant outing that combines history, architecture, and art—and a nice stroll through the neighborhood.***

Este es el Palacio Errázuriz Alvear, una de las mansiones más elegantes de Buenos Aires, ubicado sobre la Avenida del Libertador, en el barrio de La Recoleta. Fue diseñado en 1911 por arquitectos franceses, siguiendo un estilo francés. Hoy funciona como sede del Museo Nacional de Arte Decorativo, donde se exhiben colecciones de mobiliario, pinturas, esculturas y objetos de arte europeo. El acceso al museo es libre y gratuito, y siempre constituye un paseo agradable que combina historia, arquitectura y arte. Y de paso un paseo por el barrio.

***The mansion was the home of Chilean diplomat Matías Errázuriz and his wife Josefina de Alvear, members of one of Buenos Aires' most traditional families. They brought materials and furnishings directly from Europe to recreate the luxury and sophistication of the era, including unique pieces of decorative art. La mansión fue el hogar del diplomático chileno Matías Errázuriz y su esposa Josefina de Alvear, perteneciente a una de las familias más tradicionales de Buenos Aires. Ellos trajeron directamente desde Europa los materiales y el mobiliario para recrear el lujo y la sofisticación de la época, con piezas únicas de arte decorativo. Aquí vemos parcialmente la entrada.

***The couple had two children, whose names were exactly the same as their parents': Matías Errázuriz Alvear (nicknamed Mato) and Josefina Errázuriz Alvear. The family lived in the Errázuriz Alvear Palace, originally designed as a residence for the four of them. In this photograph, which is part of a museum display, we see Matías Errázuriz with his two granddaughters, Josefina and Carmen, in 1931. Both were daughters of his daughter Josefina. As can be seen, three generations bore the name Josefina, a family tradition that surely went back even further.***

El matrimonio tuvo dos hijos, cuyos nombres eran exactamente los mismos que los de sus padres: Matías Errázuriz Alvear (apodado Mato) y Josefina Errázuriz Alvear. La familia vivió en el Palacio Errázuriz Alvear, diseñado originalmente como residencia para ellos cuatro. En esta foto, que forma parte de una cartela del museo, vemos a Matías Errázuriz junto a sus dos nietas, Josefina y Carmen, en 1931. Ambas eran hijas de su hija Josefina. Como se aprecia, tres generaciones llevaron el nombre Josefina, una tradición familiar que seguramente se remontaba a generaciones anteriores.

***The Errázuriz Alvear family resided in the palace for only twenty years. After his wife's death in 1935, Matías Errázuriz offered the property to the Argentine State. In 1937, the State acquired the mansion for a symbolic price, including some of its furniture and decorations. Thanks to this, this French-style residence remains regularly open to the public. I'm intrigued to think what became of Matías after parting with his mansion, and also what became of his children: where they lived the rest of their lives and how their stories unfolded. I know that his daughter Josefina was already married, although I don't know where she lived. As the museum label indicates, this is the antechamber, accessed after ascending a luxurious staircase. It was a kind of reception room adorned with beautiful works of art. Among them, the oil painting we see on the right stands out: the lady in the red dress is Josefina Alvear Errázuriz herself, portrayed by the celebrated Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla. Truly an extraordinary luxury: to have one's own portrait painted by such an artist. How many of us could afford that privilege?***

Los Errázuriz Alvear residieron en el palacio sólo durante veinte años. Tras la muerte de su esposa en 1935, Matías Errázuriz ofreció la propiedad al Estado argentino. En 1937, el Estado adquirió la mansión por un precio simbólico, incluyendo parte de su mobiliario y decoración. Gracias a ello, esta residencia de estilo francés permanece abierta regularmente al público en general. Me intriga pensar qué fue de Matías luego de desprenderse de su mansión, y también qué destino tuvieron sus hijos: dónde vivieron el resto de sus vidas y cómo continuaron sus historias. Sé que su hija Josefina ya estaba casada, aunque desconozco dónde residía. Como indica la cartela del museo, esta es la antecámara, a la que se accede tras subir unas lujosas escaleras. Era una especie de recibidor adornado con bellas obras de arte. Entre ellas destaca el óleo que vemos a la derecha: la dama con vestido rojo es la propia Josefina Alvear Errázuriz, retratada por el célebre pintor español Joaquín Sorolla. Realmente, un lujo extraordinario: tener un retrato propio pintado por semejante artista. Cuántos de nosotros podríamos darnos ese privilegio.

Desde la antecámara se accede al que fue el escritorio del señor de la casa. Allí se conserva un retrato de Matías Errázuriz, junto a su escritorio de trabajo, sus libros y diversos objetos personales que evocan su vida cotidiana. Era el lugar donde se tomaban decisiones, se escribían cartas y se guardaban recuerdos familiares. Estos detalles transmiten la atmósfera de una época y la influencia europea en la vida aristocrática de Buenos Aires.

***This was the project the family had envisioned for their fireplace, an ambitious design that ultimately wasn't realized, and they opted for a more conventional version. What's truly surprising is that the original sketch was done by the sculptor Rodin. Amazing! To have a fireplace designed by Rodin!***

***From the hall, we entered the dining room, richly decorated with unique pieces. The table seats 24, suggesting the large family and social gatherings that took place there. Did they really invite so many people to eat? This implies an equally enormous kitchen and a team of cooks working tirelessly to cater to guests in those years. However, the kitchen is not open to the public, so we were left wanting to discover that hidden space.***

Desde el hall ingresamos al comedor, ricamente decorado con piezas únicas. La mesa tiene lugar para 24 comensales, lo que hace imaginar las grandes reuniones familiares y sociales que allí se celebraban. ¿Realmente invitarían a tanta gente a comer? Esto sugiere una cocina igualmente enorme y un equipo de cocineros trabajando intensamente para atender a los invitados en aquellos años. Sin embargo, la cocina no está abierta al público, así que nos quedamos con las ganas de descubrir ese espacio oculto.

***Upon leaving the ballroom, one enters the drawing room of the lady of the house. There she received her friends, shared tea, and organized charity gatherings. It is a delicate space, decorated in shades of pink, where the upholstery details of the armchairs and sofas are echoed in the wall coverings. An intimate and elegant space. I find it difficult to imagine the kinds of conversations these women had: what they talked about, what secrets they shared. Perhaps they passed around embroidery stitches, discussed the latest music, talked about their children and grandchildren, about literature… and, why not, even gossip.***

A la salida del salón de baile se ingresa en el salón de la señora de la casa. Allí recibía a sus amistades, compartía el té y organizaba reuniones de beneficencia. Es un ámbito delicado, decorado en tonos rosados, donde el detalle del tapizado de sillones y sofás se replica en el revestimiento de las paredes. Un espacio íntimo y elegante. Me cuesta imaginar qué tipo de conversaciones tenían esas mujeres: de qué hablaban, qué secretos compartían. Tal vez se pasaban puntos de bordado, comentaban sobre la música de moda, hablaban de sus hijos y nietos, de literatura… y, por qué no, también de chismes.

Upstairs, we can enter the private rooms of the owners' son. They are tastefully decorated in a more modern style than the rest of the mansion, creating an interesting contrast between aristocratic tradition and his generation's desire for a fresh, modern look. I feel somewhat intrusive wandering through such intimate spaces as his private bathroom. The feeling of passing through these private areas is like peeking into the owners' most intimate lives.

Ya en la planta superior podemos ingresar a las habitaciones privadas del hijo de los dueños. Están delicadamente decoradas con un estilo más moderno que el resto de la mansión, lo que marca un contraste interesante entre la tradición aristocrática y la búsqueda de un aire renovado propio de su generación. Me siento algo indiscreta al pasearme por espacios tan íntimos como su baño privado. La sensación de atravesar esas zonas reservadas es como asomarse a la vida más personal de los dueños.

That instant makes me part of the scene, as if I were living alongside Matías, Josefina, and their children, sharing for a moment the intimacy of their aristocratic world. The mirror invites me to fantasize that one of them might pass by and appear reflected next to me, as if the past were merging with the present.***

Y aquí estoy, reflejada en uno de los lujosos espejos de los pasillos de la planta superior. Ese instante me convierte en parte de la escena, como si conviviera con Matías, Josefina y sus hijos, compartiendo por un momento la intimidad de su mundo aristocrático. El espejo me invita a fantasear con que alguno de ellos pudiera pasar detrás y aparecer reflejado junto conmigo, como si el pasado se mezclara con el presente.

***And on my way out, I encountered another surprise. It was a Sunday afternoon, and the area was packed. Suddenly, I was surprised to see a film being shot: they repeated the scene several times, giving me the opportunity to take some photos. And so my walk ended. Y a la salida me encuentro con otra sorpresa. Era un domingo por la tarde y la zona, estaba llena de gente.
