SketchTravel – Sketching in the Swiss Alps

Beautiful green valleys full of cows and chalets

Drawing Swiss style structures on a walk around the narrow roads surrounding the town of Grindelwald.

Grindelwald must be everyone’s favorite town in the Swiss Alps. Nestled in a lush green valley amidst the Bernese Alps, it is a small traditional Swiss style village with just the right amount of amenities for us. Hotels, restaurants, grocery stores and walkable, interesting streets. Eiger Mountain dominates the view, with its ever-changing weather.

We took the small-gauge train to Kleine Scheidegg, and then on to Wengen, where we took the tram back up the mountain.

At the summit we jumped off and walked part of the way back to Grindelwald before jumping back on the tram.

My sketch with watercolor added

I walked many of the small roads around the town and valley, and decided to do a sketch of this little cluster of homes. This drawing was done using brown permanent ink in a quill pen, so that I could make thicker or thinner lines as I applied pressure to the pen. A great way to avoid monotony of line weight. The watercolor washes were added for color.
