You will be hard-pressed to find a Mexican town with as astounding natural beauty as Huatulco. In a country with places like Cancun, Chiapas, Cabo and Riviera Nayarit, that's saying a lot. But even the most fervent admirer of the Mexican Caribbean, can't deny that Huatulco's beauty is of a different kind.
What makes Huatulco so unique, is its quirky configuration. A beach town is usually built along a long wide bay (think of Acapulco or Puerto Vallarta), or maybe a long stretch of beach (think of Riviera Maya or Riviera Nayarit), and then you have this spectacular corner of the Mexican Pacific coastline, which consists of 9 gorgeous bays and 36 amazing beaches!
You can't compete with that.
Yes, Huatulco doesn't have the humongous resorts of Cancun, neither the diveristy of golf courses of Cabo, and if that's what you are looking for then this is not the place for you. However, what this place has in strides is a melancholic and mysterious beauty that permeates the whole town and gives it that laid back feeling that visitors just love.
Hutulco was the first tourist destination in the Americas to obtain the coveted EarthCheck certification that recognizes it as a Sustainable Tourist Community, which holds since 2005. Then in 2011 it became the first community in the WORLD to get the EarthCheck Gold certification!
Because that's what Huatulco is all about: nature. It was developed by the federal government as an Integrated Planning Center (CIP by its Spanish initials) in 1985 and the master plan actually designated only 6.35% of its land for the tourist zone, 3.45% for the urban zone and, check this out, 90.19% for nature preservation.
You see what we are talking about here? Huatulco will never become a new Acapulco, where you can't hardly find a place to build, or even park. Actually, one of the main criticisms against Huatulco is that it lacks a proper highway that connects it with Mexico City and other large cities. But even that is for a reason. This is a secluded paradise that is perfect just the way it is. It's not about massive tourism, spring breakers or long weekends. Huatulco is about long relaxing vacations, enjoying nature, its sounds and its views, perfect for a honeymoon, or for bringing the family.
Let Cancun live in the spotlight, Huatulco loves its natural privacy...
