El sol inclemente era un brasero incrustado en el cielo azul, hacía mucho calor aquel mediodía. El colegio rural lucía especialmente amarillo, el resplandor llegaba a cada lugar y se colaba por las ventanas y puertas. En planta quedaban los cuatro salones, tres oficinas y dos baños, arriba, en el primer piso, estaba las aulas de manualidades, arte y música. Grandes y extensas paredes rodeaban el recinto que albergaba, además, un gran patio y una cancha deportiva. Por el portón empezaban a ingresar los niños que asistían al turno vespertino, quienes, en medio de risas y ocurrencias, se disponían a formar filas para ir a sus respectivos salones. En el primer salón los aguardaba la maestra Susana, ella se quedó parada unos segundos, sin pronunciar palabra, ante las veinte miradas inquietas de sus estudiantes. La planificación de ese día era sobre geografía. Antes de entrar al aula, tenía la rutina de saludar a cada uno con un gesto y movimiento de baile particular. En la escuela también se encontraban las maestras Roxana y Amanda con sus grupos. El recinto escolar se abrigaba en risas, juegos y conocimiento. A los pocos minutos, todos los niños estaban concentrados en las enseñanzas que les impartían, copiando en sus cuadernos lo que había en la pizarra. En medio del intenso calor, había un silencio que enamoraba. Afuera, las hojas de los árboles apenas se movían, pero las distintas tonalidades de verde eran agradables a la vista.

The inclement sun was a brazier embedded in the blue sky, it was very hot that noon. The rural school looked especially yellow, the glare reached every place and filtered through the windows and doors. On the ground floor were the four classrooms, three offices and two bathrooms, upstairs, on the first floor, were the craft, art and music classrooms. Large and extensive walls surrounded the enclosure that also housed a large patio and a sports field. # The children who attended the evening shift began to enter through the gate, who, amid laughter and jokes, prepared to form lines to go to their respective classrooms. Susana, the teacher, was waiting for them in the first classroom. She stood for a few seconds, without saying a word, before the twenty restless looks of her students. The planning for that day was about geography. Before entering the classroom, I had a routine of greeting everyone with a particular gesture and dance move. # Teachers Roxana and Amanda were also at school with their groups. The school campus was sheltered in laughter, games and knowledge. Within a few minutes, all the children were concentrating on what was being taught, copying what was on the blackboard into their notebooks. In the midst of the intense heat, there was a silence that fell in love. Outside, the leaves on the trees barely moved, but the various shades of green were pleasing to the eye.

A media tarde, la maestra Roxana llevó a su curso a la clase de educación física con el profesor Andrés. Ella se quedó como espectadora y, cuando se ameritaba, ayudaba a los educandos con sus prácticas atléticas. Amanda hizo lo propio con su grupo, pero los trasladó hasta el salón de música, allá los esperaba el instructor Juan, la educadora acompañó la lección, pues era aprendiz de guitarra, quería tocar el instrumento y escuchar las orientaciones, pronto realizarían una actividad cultural y ella participaría con sus discentes. Mientras tanto, Susana quedó en planta, continuaba con sus labores académicas. De pronto, se interrumpió de forma abrupta la cotidianidad, los árboles comenzaron a sacudirse, sus troncos se contorsionaban, el piso se movía y muchos objetos cayeron violentamente. Los gritos se adueñaron del espacio, los estudiantes corrían desesperados dentro del aula, chocaban entre sí, sus ojos lucían aterrados. Se escuchaban pisadas exasperadas y los cristales de ventanas rompiéndose. El terror era absoluto. En medio de gritos desgarradores, las columnas empezaron a ceder, en tanto, la pared central del colegio, donde estaba la puerta principal, bailaba hasta desprenderse de su base y desplomarse pesadamente. El grupo de niños que hacía deporte en la cancha pudo observar cómo la tierra se abrió y prácticamente se tragó la planta baja.

In the middle of the afternoon, teacher Roxana took her class to physical education class with teacher Andrés. She stayed as a spectator and, when necessary, helped the students with their athletic practices. Amanda did the same with her group, but moved them to the music room, where the instructor Juan was waiting for them, the educator accompanied the lesson, since she was a guitar apprentice, she wanted to play the instrument and listen to the instructions, soon they would carry out a cultural activity and she would participate with her students. # Meanwhile, Susana stayed on the floor, continuing with her academic work. Suddenly, everyday life was abruptly interrupted, the trees began to shake, their trunks contorted, the floor moved and many objects fell violently. The screams took over the space, the students ran desperately inside the classroom, colliding with each other, their eyes looked terrified. # Exasperated footsteps and window panes were heard breaking. The terror was absolute. Amid heartrending screams, the columns began to give way, while the central wall of the school, where the main door was, danced until it came off its base and collapsed heavily. The group of children who played sports on the field could see how the earth opened up and practically swallowed the ground floor.

La maestra Susana sentía que el piso se estaba hundiendo, en medio de aquella histeria colectiva, organizó a su grupo para abandonar el salón. Tras advertir que la salida estaba bloqueada por la tierra y los escombros, decidió llevar a los niños hasta el primer piso, donde estaba el salón de música. Las escaleras se movían como si fueran de gelatina, la intensidad del temblor se mantenía. # Susana se encontró con Amanda, quien buscaba la manera de consolar a su grupo, los niños estaban debajo de pupitres y mesas. Todos se reunieron en aquella aula que ya acusaba el castigo del sismo. No tenían escapatoria, la estructura se hundía, el techo amenazaba con caer, mientras afuera prevalecía el caos. Ante un desenlace devastador, se tomaron de las manos, se abrazaron y empezaron a rezar. El terremoto cesó a los pocos segundos, los padres y familiares de los niños, y del personal, al observar las ruinas, lloraban desconsolados afuera de la escuela, varios se lanzaron desesperados a buscar sobrevivientes bajo los escombros. La rápida presencia de los bomberos agilizó el rescate, todos los niños estaban ilesos, el resto del personal también se salvó. Ese día no hubo pérdidas humanas y aunque el temblor duró apenas unos minutos, aquel fatídico evento los marcó a todos para siempre.

The stairs moved as if they were made of jelly, the intensity of the tremor remained. # Susana met Amanda, who was looking for a way to comfort her group, the children were under desks and tables. Everyone gathered in that classroom that was already suffering the punishment of the earthquake. They had no escape, the structure was collapsing, the roof threatened to collapse, while chaos prevailed outside. Faced with a devastating outcome, they held hands, hugged each other and began to pray. # The earthquake stopped in a few seconds, the parents and relatives of the children, and the staff, seeing the ruins, wept disconsolately outside the school, several desperately rushed to look for survivors under the rubble. The quick presence of the firefighters expedited the rescue, all the children were unharmed, the rest of the staff was also saved. That day there were no human losses and although the tremor lasted just a few minutes, that fateful event marked them all forever.
