Hello Steemians!
On today's day, 13 December 1789 the National Guard of France was created!
The National Assembly discussed the raising of a "Bourgeois Guard" for Paris on 11 July 1789.
The reason for that being the King's replacement of the prime minister Jacques Necker on the same day.
Just 2 days after, on 13 July, the "Bourgeois Militia" was formed.

On 15 July Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette was elected commander in chief and the "Bourgeois Militia" was officially renamed to the "National Guard".
Initially each town ran it's own National Guard, but they were all united by Lafayette on 14 July 1790.

After the abolition of the monarchy on 21 September 1792, the National Guard fought for the Revolution and played a crucial role in forcing the wishes of the capitol on the French National Assembly .
Some members of the National Guard attempted to overthrow the Directory during the royalist insurrection on 5 October 1795, but were defeated by forces led by Napoleon Bonaparte.
In 1870 the National Guard was called to defend Paris against the Prussian army.

Shortly after, on 14 March 1872 the National Guard was disbanded, because it represented a threat to the security and order of the Third Republic.
Last but not least, 145 years after it was disbanded, a new National Guard formed on 12 October 2016 by president François Hollande!
