Ahh Young Love! So pure and innocent. A Love so Beautiful is probably the sweetest, non-annoying, innocent (did I say innocent again? XD) and endearing drama I have ever seen. A love story of two childhood friends that spans over 19years.
There have been many dramas with a similar theme and concept to A Love So Beautiful. A theme so overused that you could literally predict everything that's gonna happen. An energetic, naive, enthusiastic and cheerful female lead who is head over heels on our super smart, cool, handsome and almost perfect but cool male lead. We all have seen this formula work before, but what made this drama so popular compared to others?
Answer: The Characters
Have you seen how adorable our male and female leads are? While we often see female leads who are quirky in nature to some point that it's almost childish to watch, thus hella annoying. Chen Xiao Xi is different. I have never felt any annoyance towards her. Sure she act childish all the time but everything is carefully moderated that it's not at annoying to watch at all. In fact, whatever she does simply comes out as so cheesy that it puts a smile on everyone that have watched the show.
Jiang Chen, our male lead is no different. While he may look cold on the outside especially to Xiao Xi, the show made it sure to show that the feelings are not one-sided. One problem I have with this generic formula is that it takes a "long time" for the male lead to realize his feelings, thus when he finally realized it the female lead may have lost interest on him anymore or is so tired of his bs. Honestly what made me watch this drama was the height difference between the two. Just how tall is the male lead?
Since love stories wouldn't be complete without a third party, we get this guy Wu Bo Song. He far beats every second male lead ever. The closest I got to annoyance to this drama was how the show treated this poor little fella. He literally is the perfect guy any girl could wish for. He literally would do anything and everything for the woman she loves. Even if him and the male lead are aware of each other's feelings towards Xiao Xi, they still respect and show no ill manners towards each other. They still remain good friends despite that.
To complete the gang, we get two more adorable people. Lin Jingxiao is the best support any female lead could get and will try everything and anything just to help her best friend get the love of her life while Lu Yang is... goofy? He's the comedian of the group and tries to make the group intact.
Despite the overused simplistic plot, what made this show great was its characters. None of them were annoying and were all adorable to watch. The show is so light-hearted, innocent and so cheesy that it felt pretty nostalgic just watching it. It also reminds us how we act and deal our feelings before in our youth too.
