Comparisons between literary work of George R. R. Martin and its screen adaptations tend to favour the former. This was be noticed even long time before Game of Thrones, and one of the examples is Martin’s 1979 novella Sandkings. In 1995 it was adapted into feature-length first episode of relaunched television anthology The Outer Limits. Protagonist, played by Beau Bridges, is Dr. Simon Kress, an ambitious scientist who, after cancellation of an important project, steals Mars soil samples from laboratory and continues experiments in his shed. The samples include ant-like creatures that begin showing not only intelligence but actually worship Kress, making him disregard his own family and sanity. Script by Melinda Snodgrass changed many details of Martin’s text and made it more suitable for mid 1990s television standards. The main reason for utter disappointment is, however, in failed mix of cliched horror with unconvincing family drama. Low production values and cheap special effects made Sandkings only worse.
