Unveiling Digital Scent Technology: (Electronic Nose)

With the ever growing evolution in the field of Bio-Mechanical Engineering, there has been rapid increase in the emergence of new tech, especially in the area of Olfactory Technology. This is a technology that has to do with the creation, transmission, reception, and representation of scent-enabled electronic media. This tech is called “Digital Scent Technology

HARDWARE OVERVIEW

Firstly, the hardware needed for the perception of the smell is the Electronic Nose.

This will be used in the detection and measurement of the Odour Dilution. After the detection, there is need for an olfactometer that will determine the olfactory thresholds.

But for this to be done, a baseline gas has to be incorporated which will measure the intensity of the odour received. (Now scientists are experimenting with other forms of baseline gases to make the whole process less volatile).

WORKING PRINCIPLE OF THE ELECTRONIC NOSE

Apart from the fact that it has been created to mimic human olfactory system, it does more than just that. It can distinguish, to the minutest details, scents that cannot even be detected by human nose. This could be explained by the fact that some techs have been incorporated into it. Let’s take a look at these techs:

Metal Oxide Semiconductor Device: This will be used to amplify electrical impulses. (I have to mention that digital scents are being transmitted in form of electrical impulses).

Quartz-Crystal Microbalance: This will measure changes in frequency as the scent is transmitted.

Surface Acoustic Wave Device: This detects changes in natural phenomena.

With perfection in this technology, the need for X-Ray and MRI Scan will be sidelined.

POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS OF DIGITAL SCENT TECHNOLOGY

• Detection of Chemical and Bio weapon

• Detection of various degrees of cancer

• Detection of Bacterial and Viral infection

• Could revolutionize Nasal prosthesis

We're all in the brink of a major revolution in the Tech World!!!
