Computation: the Scientific Accelerator

No technology has changed the ways of the world quite so much as computers. There's a computer in everything now, from your car to your coffee maker, and they only get more powerful and more widespread.

And while computers have and will continue to shape everyday life, their effect on research and scientific work has been even more pronounced. As we speak, we are approaching a new era of supremely powerful supercomputers that will again have a huge impact on science and technology, from biology to physics to desalination.

To fully appreciate where we're headed, it's appropriate to understand where we've come from. I put together this history of computing to lay the groundwork for an exploration of our newest computer technology.
