This terracotta head representation was discovered lying buried in a grave in the Toluca Valley, just outside Mexico City. Its origins have been fiercely contested. Because it looks similar to statues found in ancient Rome, some archeologists think it is proof that cross-continental trade and travel took place centuries before Columbus took to the seas. However, it’s also suggested that the Tecaxic-Calixtlahuaca Head may have ended up in the Americas after a wrecked Roman ship washed ashore.
