Fishing and camping in Gippsland

One of the things we really love about Australia having emigrated here from the UK is how easy it is to enjoy the outdoors. Not only is the weather conducive, and the countryside beautiful, but great effort has been made to create public camping sites and picnic places and even free electric or gas barbecues!

Here I want to share with you one occasion where we took advantage of a free camp site for a weekend away and some fishing. @tomekkk introduced us to this camping spot right on the shores of the lake. We launched the kayak onto the lake and paddled around for a couple of hours trolling lures behind the boat and caught seven Tailor between us. Tailor were a new fish to me but not unlike the seabass we have in UK, they are fast hard hitting predators that really put a bend in your rod when they hit. Here is my catch from the day:

This was my my catch from the day. Four Tailor, a fish completely new to me!

Apparently molly was quite keen to join in the fishing but eventually she decided staying on land might be a better plan

molly is a great swimmer

Later we cooked all the tailor on our camp fire and enjoyed a fresh fish feast. To have a good even distribution of heat over the fire I decided to dig a trench for the fire. Its not as pretty for sitting around at night but its a lot easier for cooking if you don't have anything available to raise the grills above the flames.

Our fresh fish cooking over the campfire, I think the smoke was getting in our eyes a bit!

The campsite is set out in a number of clearings in the woods right next to the shore of the lake and is a wonderful facility provided for free. There aren't any toilets here so you need to come prepared for that.

Camping amidst the trees

This was our first camping trip in Australia and we were very lucky to be introduced to camping here in such a nice fashion by good friends.

Happy camping everyone - thanks for reading - have a great day
