"Calamay" The Heart and Soul of Bohol

For generations, the traditional way of making this delicacy has passed on today's modern Boholanos. Truly Bohol Island has a lot to offer, not to mention their magnificent nature, luxurious hotels, white sand beaches, recreation and adventures. Bohol is also known for their best tasting delicacies and one of those is their famous calamay!

What is Calamay?

Kalami, Delicious, Oishi! that best describes it in different languages. A sweet Filipino delicacy that is paste like and holds on your teeth as you swallow ! It is best when spread on bread or you can eat it in plain. It is also best for toppings.
As history unfolds, calamay was already being produced by Boholanos even before the colonization of Spanish in our country. And now Calamay had contributed economically and fame to Bohol. Actually, there are lots of places in Bohol which are producing Calamay since the Island has abundance of rice. But there are only few who are known for its best tasting Calamay. Mostly it is from Jagna and from our place Alburquerque Bohol.

How it is made?

Calamay is defined as product of a strong emotion and dedication. Because it takes almost a day of continuous stirring to prevent burning and to retain its texture and consistency. (Imagine how hard it is?) It is just a combination of glutinous rice, coconut milk and brown sugar.Even though making this delicacy has a very simple procedure but you need to watch it carefully. It also comes in different flavors, ubi (the purple one ) classic ( the brown) and top with peanuts.

Packaging

Traditionally it is being packed in a unique and creative packaging by using coconut shell then sealed with a crepe paper.Some were packed in a plastic containers now a days.Mostly you can buy Calamay, on port area of Bohol and some pasalubong centers.

Reminders

Always checked the expiry date indicated. And once you open it, you need to consume it right away to avoid the formation of molds and spoilage.( The life span of Calamay is only few days) You can also refrigerate it, but it will affect the texture of the product as it gets more thicker and it is hard to twirl with a fork.
