Everybody knows I'm a café habitué (does English have a normal word for someone who hangs out, reads, studies, works, meets new people, gets drunk and faces hangover.. actually lives in a café? 😄). But I'm coming from a small town in a former eastern block. Which means there are not many options when it comes to good cafés. However, there's one that I would not exchange for anything. And it's not only because of all the wonderful memories I have there.
Coffee sheep 🐏
known as Ovca in Slovak languageLocated in a steep and narrow street, it's actually a half basement. It only has those tiny little windows, which makes the interior really cozy. It could lack light a bit, but lot of it comes in through the glass roof of the smokers room (in which I spent half of my high school, by the way 😂)
dog-friendly
The coffee sheep menu is really simple, but it's got anything you might want. Teas, juices, locally made syrups and ciders (I recommend aronia and sea buckthorn ciders! 🙂). If you're feeling hungry, try one of their awesome cakes or have yourself Cyril's mustard crisps.
Ah, I forgot to mention coffee. Coffee sheep's got it's own roastery. You can also buy coffee beans in their shop just next door. And they truly know how to prepare it 🙂
In spring, before the terrace is open, we all sit on the stairs.
In the evening, the glassware on the tables changes a bit. Juices are replaced by wine or beer and instead of espresso, there's a glass of one of the liquors - locally made Žufánek gin, absinthe or nut liquor are among the most favourite..
In the evenings, this café also becomes a cultural venue.
But the most important thing is the atmosphere. After few months of going to Ovca every single day, me and my friends got to know the waiters quite well. We started to make fun of each other, they knew what we want without ordering, sometimes we helped out for a free beer and they often let us stay after closing time (actually, the opening hours here don't work at all).. We got to know other café habitués, local artists and.. well, the café society 😃
This is Ľudka, Coffee Sheep personnel and our friend.
I literally spent 4 years of highschool in Ovca. And I don't regret a minute of it.
