Everyone, will one day die. Whether it is through accident, poison, murder, sickness or suicide. The truth remains that death is unavoidable. Death, therefore, catches up with everybody whether young or old. The age at which one dies does not really count.

Different arguments and views have been posited on the cause of death. Some argue that death comes as a result of man disobeying God, his creator. Others are of the view that death marks the final phase in the cyclical development of man. But whether human beings die as a result of any of the above reasons, is not an issue for discourse. The fact remains that death is unavoidable, coming when it will.

According to a popular legend, “Death was a sensible messenger of God responsible for submitting souls back to God". The first assignment given to Death was fraught with a lot of obstacles which made the task abortive. Eventually, he was greatly punished for undue leniency.

First, he was asked to visit a farmer and remove his soul for God. When Death got to the man on his farm, the former relayed the subject of his mission. The farmer appealed to Death to spare his life since he had not completed his assignment on earth. Death left him and proceeded to a teacher in a classroom with his pupils‘. “l have been sent to take your soul back to your creator”, death said. “Look at me and these innocent children who have not gotten enough from me; please spare my life,” the teacher begged. Thus, the teacher was shown mercy and was allowed to live.

Next, it was the turn of the mason who at the time of the visit by Death, had just laid the foundation of a very big house. When the horrendous visitor arrived to take his soul, what he faced was a passionate appeal from the mason. The reasons he gave were that the house was just at the foundation stage and could collapse if abandoned. Again, the owner of the uncompleted building would be sad. More so, there would be no shelter for him and his family. His excuses were accepted by Death and he was given another chance. When it seemed everyone had one cogent reason or the other that made his life to be spared, Death returned to God and reported what he had seen and heard.

In a fiery fury, God plucked out Death’s two eyes thereby rendering him blind.

Death was. Therefore, commanded to return to earth and carry out his duty successfully without pity.

Hence, Death has come back to dwell amongst us. He doesn't show pity because

Once bitten, twice shy.
