My BMW Injured Me! | Why You Don't Always Get What You Pay For

There's an old adage that states "you get what you pay for." While that's usually true, it's not always the case. My BMW is a prime example of when this adage does not apply.

While going on a mundane errand, I made a 90-degree right turn in my German roadster. As per my usual practice, I released the steering wheel with my right hand while grazing it with my left hand. Suddenly, I felt a sharp undulation on the wheel cut my skin, immediately causing blood loss.

Fortunately, I was near home so I hurried back to fix myself up. I later discovered that some of the "accoutrements" of the wheel eroded and fell apart, leading to rough surfaces that acted like a hot knife on butter.

Bad Beemer!

I thought that paying for a luxury vehicle meant a luxury experience. Boy, was I wrong! Many German premium cars are temperamental as all hell, and a number of gremlins can lead to inconveniences and costly repairs.

Furthermore, BMW and its competitors are starting to incorporate extremely cheap materials into the interior structures. I was not expecting this at all, since this is the first time I've ever experienced a "steering wheel injury."

What I can confirm is that you don't always get what you pay for. Perhaps it was more appropriate to say that in an era where people took pride in their work. Now, it's all about going through the motions in order to get the paycheck.

Also, companies are simply looking at the bottom line, customer service be damned!

Knowledge is Everything

So before you go plunk down serious cash for your next luxury vehicle, do yourself a favor and check out the automaker's reputation, and not just its performance stats. A high-end vehicle should deliver a high-end experience, whether you're commuting in traffic or taking a sweeping corner at max speed.

And remember, a high price doesn't always translate to high quality. Just my money tip of the day!
