The Statue of Llywelyn ap Gruffydd Fychan in Llandovery, Wales

On Sunday we went to Llandovery and decided to have a closer look at the statue of local hero Llywelyn ap Gruffydd Fychan. The statue is extremely shiny and contrasts dramatically against the dark grey stone of the ruins.

I know what you must be thinking; it reminds you of ...

From the car this looked like a small mound easily accessible and there were no warnings for people with issues of mobility.

The weather was quite changeable : from heavy rain to overcast and bits of blue sky (quite typical).

We climbed without much difficulty and admired the quiet view.

We also looked around to discover that there weren't any other people visiting this site. I don't personally know that much about these historical constructions but was amazed to see the thickness of the walls.

I also noticed that the Council have had to erect window protections to prevent people from climbing the building and injuring themselves and making the site not viable to visit which would be a shame.

The main feature of the site apart from the ruins is the sculpture commemorating Llywelyn ap Gruffyd Fychan of Caeo.

It was good to read the sign below to learn more about him and finally get the name of this hero because I originally thought it was Glyndŵr...

I also discovered that the statue was made by Toby and Gideon Petersen.

It was hard to climb down. If you ever visit, make sure you are wearing the right type of shoes because there are no steps.
