While the last post was more of a general knowledge of semi numismatic coins, I am now going to break it down into three specific catagories.

Basic semi numismatic coins

These are all the government issued coins that carry the lowest premium over spot and are by far the easiest to liquidate in time of financial need. Examples of coins that fit into this category: American Silver Eagle (United States), Silver Maple Leaf (Canada), Kangaroo (Australia), Philharmonic (Austria), Libertad (Mexico), Britannia (United Kingdom), Krugerrand (South Africa). All of the coins listed above come in both silver and gold. Obviously it depends on where you live on which ones to purchase. The most recognized coin in the world is the American Silver Eagle. While i don’t personal think of it as a semi numismatic coin, it does fall into this category. All of these coins also have an unlimited mintage other then the silver Krugerrand which were capped at one million strikes.

True semi numismatic coins

Are coins or medals that have a higher premium over the spot price. Which is typically around $4-5 over the spot price. They are also coins or medals that typically have a capped mintage of less then 300,000. The only two coin series that do not have capped mintages but are still a true semi numismatic are the Queen’s Beast coins (United Kingdom) and the Panda coins (China). Examples of other true semi numismatic coins are: Kookaburra Series (Perth Mint), Koala Series (Perth Mint), Lunar Series (Perth Mint), Rwanda Wildlife Series (Bavarian Mint), Rwanda Lunar Series (Bavarian Mint), Nautical Ounce Series (Bavarian Mint), Oriental Border Britannia (Royal Mint), Chiwoo Medal Series (South Korea), Incuse Maple Leaf Coin (Royal Canadian Mint).

Now the final category in semi numismatic coins are extremely limited mintage coins. These are coins will mintages under 20,000 coins. Most of these coins are proof strikes and are for very serious collectors because of the extreme price. These coins have zero fluctuation with the spot price and are based solely on their collectability. Examples of these coins are: Proof Queen’s Beast Series, Proof Rwanda Lunar Series, Proof Perth Mint Swan Series. There are many more specialty proofs as well.

Hope this post helped to clarify the different categories.
