By the age of 41, Revere was a well established, prosperous, and prominent Boston silversmith. He assisted in helping to organize an intelligence and alarm system in order to keep a watch on the British military. Revere also served as a Massachusetts militia officer. After the war, Revere returned to his passion the silversmith trade. He used his business profits from his expanding business to finance his work to expand beyond silversmithing and into iron casting, bronze bell and cannon casting, along with the forging of copper bolts and spikes. He became the first American, in 1800 to successfully roll copper into sheets to be used for sheathing on naval vessels.
He was known as a forward thinking businessman and his shop was a leader in semi-industrialization. He was also very progressive in his labor standards, he began with apprentices but in time began to hire tradesman as his employees, although this was a big change for many artisans which he understood so he assisted in making the transition easier by offering benefits like flexible work hours, pay rates equal to skills and allowing liquor on the jobsite.
