Darlene is an only child. She was very sickly when she was a baby, so her parents were worried that if they had another child, it would be the same as Darlene, so they decided to have only her. Aside from that worry, they also wanted to focus their time on her.
Luckily, when Darlene became an elementary school student, she didn't experience anything bad related to her health. Her parents were very happy about this.
One day, Darlene arrived home from school, she's now 9 years old. "Mom? I'm home!"
"Welcome home, Darlene! How was school?" Her mom answered while giving her a hug and a kiss on the cheek.
"It was great mom! I always enjoy going to school. But mom, can I ask a question?"
"Of course dear. What do you want to ask?"
"Mom, why don't I have a brother or a sister? Most of my classmates have siblings. It seems fun!" she asked innocently.
Her mom smiled at her, "Hmmm... why don't we talk about it over some snacks? I'll prepare it while you go and wash yourself first."
"Okay!" she smiled and hurriedly obeyed her mother's suggestion.
After a few minutes, she went to the living room and her mother was done preparing their snacks.
"Yummy! It's my favorite cookie! Thanks mom." she thanked her mom and started taking a bite on her cookie. "So mom, about my question?"
Her mother giggled and asked, "Do you want to have a brother or a sister?"
"Is it possible?" Her eyes turned wider and brighter.
"I'm sorry dear, but it's quite impossible now. Mom is already old to be pregnant." She paused then she explained why Darlene didn't have any siblings. "Do you feel lonely, dear?"
"No mom. I don't feel lonely at all. You and dad always give your time to me, so I'm really happy."she exclaimed and hugged her mom.
Later that night, her dad came home from work with a box on his arms.
"Welcome home dad! What's that?" she asked while curiously looking at the box her dad was carrying.
"We have a new family member!" her dad announced while gently putting the box on the floor of their living room.
"OMG! It's a cute little puppy!"she reacted happily while taking the puppy out from the box and bringing it closer to her chest. "Where'd you get this?"
Her father actually saw it on the street. Someone left it there, so he thought of adopting it as a new member of their family.
Her mom happily hugged her husband's arm while they're both looking at Darlene who is smiling happily.
"Welcome to the family, Pochi!" she told the puppy.
Pochi then licked her cheeks and wagged its tail as if saying that he's grateful for his new family.
