4TH GRADE MATH - COMPARING NUMBERS TO HUNDRED MILLIONS

Comparing Numbers up to Hundred Millions

This post is to learn how to compare two numbers. There are very basic rules to compare two numbers. I use the following criterion to compare two numbers;

First of all I see if the given numbers have the different number of digits. If Yes, then the number with MORE digits is GREATER. For example; 100 000 is greater than 99 999 because 100 000 got 6 digits and 99 999 got only 5 digits.
If both the numbers got same number of digits then we should write these numbers into the place value chart and start to compare digits from Far Left towards right. The number whose first digit is greater becomes the Greater number. This is explained in the following activities.

Note: How to pick the direction of the the symbol;

1. Larger Number POINTS AT the Smaller Number (Idea suggested by @dkmathstats)

2. The BEAK opening towards the Larger Number.
