Addition Strategies - Doubles Plus One and Doubles Plus Two
In the previous post we discussed the repeated addition of a number which is known as adding doubles. This skill is very important to do addition in mind and quickly come with the answer. The next strategies are adding one to the doubles and adding two to the doubles.
Today we will discuss these simple addition tricks of doubles plus one and doubles plus two. Tell the child that keep addition of doubles in mind and whenever he/she sees an addition problem try to see it as doubles. For example; 5 + 6 can be seen as 5 + 5 and 1 extra (always double of the smaller number). After splitting the addition problem into doubles then to see what is left extra. It can be 1, 2 or 3. In this example is 1, now 5 + 5 is 10 and add extra 1 to 10 to get 11 as the answer.
