How can I instill generosity in children, without exerting pressure?

Generosity is essential for the formation of an honest and noble human being who knows how to live in balance with those around him.
Generosity is a virtue that we have practiced little and even less, we teach. We value "having" a lot, but "sharing", "dividing", ends up being in the background, and not only in relation to material goods. Generosity is essential for the formation of an honest and noble human being who knows how to live in balance with those around him.

How to show children the importance of nurturing a generous posture.

1. Show what generosity is with the example

Generosity refers to the impetus to share, add something constructive to other people. It is common for a child to feed a sense of possession with regard to their objects and toys, since "having" something makes them feel safe.

As it grows, however, it is the job of parents to show, with daily examples, that it is essential to divide, help others, see their needs. It does not serve or explain the concept without practicing it.
Children interact with the environment and learn through observation, assimilate examples and not theories that have never been applied in practice.

2. Give opportunities to be generous

It is necessary to sow the awareness that your child lives in a system of cooperation between individuals, in which each one must take responsibility for their actions. It is necessary to clean up afterwards, without waiting for someone to do it for him.

He needs to learn to take care of the functioning of things so that he can be genuinely generous. Thanks for washing the dishes, but do not give rewards. Create opportunities for him to exercise that position, so that he occupies those spaces!

3. Encourage your child to play with other children.

When a child or young person plays a video game, for example, they develop a series of cognitive abilities (scenario perception, deduction, logical reasoning, etc.), but when they play with their classmates, they learn, little by little, that they have what to share to achieve coexistence.

Group games are essential to develop this notion of the social. Only in this way the child understands that one must listen to the other and negotiate with him, wait his turn to speak and act, give individual advantages in favor of the common good.

4. Be accessible to listen and support.

If your child naturally perceives that he can count on you, whether to air, celebrate, receive guidance or support, he will feel the true security that comes from the parents' bond. Then be present and be accessible!
If a young person is sure of himself, of his identity and of his place in the world, he will be more open to listen to other people, to be understanding and generous with them. Generosity emerges little by little and needs to be encouraged at every stage of human development.
