Summary Part 1: Breaking down different VERBS

The different parts of speech can be confusing and hard to learn.

Let's break down the verb and have a look at the different characteristics under the verb:

In a sentence the verb expresses what the subject does or what the subject is. There are three types of verbs: Action verbs, Linking verbs and Helping verbs.

Let's have a closer look at Action and Linking verbs:

Action verbs

In a sentence the action verb tells what the subject does, it expresses physical or mental actions.
Examples: think, eat, collide, realise, dance.
In the present tense statements with subjects of he, she, or it, we add an s to the verb: I go downstairs, we go downstairs, they go downstairs, but, he goes downstairs, she goes downstairs, Loren goes downstairs.

Linking verbs

In a sentence a linking verb tells what the subject is rather than what it does. Linking verbs express a state of being. All the forms of the verb 'to be' are linking verbs.
Example: am, are, is, were, was, have been, had been.
These verbs connect a subject, Loren, with more information about that subject - Loren is an athlete. Loren was glad.

Another set of linking verbs relate to seeing, tasting touching, hearing and smelling.
Example: appear, seem, look, feel, smell, taste and sound.
They connect their subject with a word offering more information about the subject - Loren seem anxious about the test. My carpet still feels damp. The curtains smell a little smoky.

There are many different verbs as we can see from the short breakdown above, the best way to grasp the idea of this is to practice identifying the characteristics and make sure you understand the definition of each verb.
