#ExperimentalMondays - How to make glowing water

Do you know what happens to tonic water when you put it under a black light? Want to find out?

This experiment is great for any age to learn about the the effect that the black light has on the tonic water to turn light that we can't see (UV light) into something visible in the form of glowing water.

All you will need for this fun and awesome experiment is:

Let's do this!

First things first, get two glasses or bottles and pour normal water into the one and tonic water into the other.

In the glass/bottle with normal water, take out the felt from the highlighter and put it into the glass with water so that it can soak.

Take your black light and shine it on both the glasses, this will work best in a dark room. Do you see it? It's great!!

Note: You can also experiment with different colour highlighters to make it look even more psychedelic.

But how does it work?

It's as easy as pie. The highlighter's fluid and the tonic water contains something called phosphors. This gives it the ability to be luminescent in the black light.

The ingredient quinine in tonic water also makes it able to glow under the black light and gives it that bitter taste when you drink it.
A little bit of a bitter-sweet situation if you ask me!
