Well, guys! Today, I would like to talk about my students, the books and their reading habit. But before that, can you tell me what book do you like to read? How often do you sleep with the books? How many books do you read in a year?
In some developed countries such as Japan and China, reading book has become a good habit of their communities. There were 79% of Japanese had read a paper book in the past year and Chinese people read 4.56 books per year. Other countries like Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland were nominated as the most literate countries in 2016. People in Philippines read 7.6 hours per week, Thailand 9.4 hours per week, and India 10.7 hours per week. Meanwhile, in Indonesia, reading habit is still low. Indonesian people read 6 hours in a week.source
Next, why people do reading? Based on some resources, there are some advantages that people can gain by reading books. It can enhance connectivity in human's brain, relieve stress, increase creativity, imagination, and empathy, improve concentration, and having better memory. In addition, education is the most much reasons why people read. They intend to improve their knowledge and capacity in their field by reading many books as they can. In line with this,"Books are the windows which the soul looks out", Henry Ward Beecher stated. We open the door or window to see what is going on outside of the house. When people read, they sometimes find something new, have knowledge change, and perspective change.
In our case, not many students like to read books in their spare time. Therefore, in the school, literacy program for the students is supported very much. The program is intended to embed students' habit in reading and to enhance their skills in writing. Designing a Reading Corner as a part of the classroom is one of concrete activity in Literacy Program at school. It facilitates the students with several interesting books which they can read when they want it.
However, there are also some of the students who prefer reading books outside of the class. They make a deal with the teacher to enjoy reading under the tree.
