Some Useful Tips For First Time Goat Breeders

In my country, many of the citizens survive off of goat meat and we enjoy it as one of our staple foods. This meat is also in high demand for religious purposes, making it profitable livestock. Where I live, we have initiated goat farming programs that integrate traditional farming methods, with the aim of assisting the poor and those who battle to find work.

The program training takes place at Agro Politan, and Indonesia Clinic. It is run by Mr. Bayu Diningrat, who invites the whole community to attend the lectures, making junior and high school students a priority. By administering this program, he is helping people to become independent and resourceful, in that they can earn their own income from what the program teaches them.

In some of the lectures, the following helpful points were discussed:

Why goat farming is profitable

As we shepherd the goats, we know very well that goats are interesting creatures and their life-cycle always amazes us. Unlike farming quails, chickens and ducks, goats do not necessarily need to be fed anything else except grass. Grass alone will fatten them up and keep them in good health in most instances. This is why breeding goats is very profitable.

Choosing a breed to farm with

When breeding goats, you need to be aware that there are two types of breeds. There is a larger breed of goat that starts reproducing from 9 months of age and a smaller breed that is ready to breed with from the age of 6 months. In the program I mentioned, only the smaller breed is worked with, since the goats can potentially give birth twice a year. Goat farming does not always turn a fast profit at first, but it is a long-term investment that can generate 100% profit if we work wisely and are patient.

There are two ways to make a profit from goat breeding

Doubling

This concept is done by buying young goats, maintaining them and then selling for a profit. I have included a calculation as an example below.
The calculation:
One goat in the time-span of 6 months =
1-6 sold and buy back two tails.
2-12 sold and buy back four tails.
4-18 sold and buy back eight tails.
Etc.
When this process is done for five years, you could possibly have more than 4 thousand goats!

Breeding

Breeding goats take patience and you need to take time to give your goats the love and care they need to produce healthy and thriving offspring. This method takes slightly longer to turn profits.

** A tip when feeding your goats

Goats should be lead to the drink trough once a day only, i.e. during the day. Allowing them to drink constantly is ineffective, since it hampers the digestion process of fattening the goats.

Benefits of breeding goats

Not only do goats offer us meat and milk, but they also provide manure and urine that helps to cultivate fertile farmlands. In addition, goat droppings are also excellent for chickens, as they contain vitamins a, b, b complex and green leaves (chlorophyll), which chickens feed on.

The above are just a few of the important points that where brought to light and were discussed. But the information is all extremely helpful when one is considering goat farming as an option of an income.
