Homework, O terrible homework..... How to help yourself to get it done - Information for kids

How many times have you heard your parents say that you may not do anything else unless your homework is done?

You really do not understand why your teachers give you any homework, but even if it may feel like they just want to spoil your fun, they mostly give you homework for extra exercise and to make sure that you understand the work you have done.

In order for us to make sure that we have a future, we need to learn certain things and work hard.  Homework is not always nice but it will help you learn, but how can you help yourself to get it done and spend some time doing other things you like?

It is important to find a nice quiet place to complete your homework - if it is too busy and noisy you can be distracted and not give your full attention to what you have to do, but also take longer in doing it and wasting a lot of time in which you can do something else.

Take your time and work at your own pace - do not try and rush through the work, but also do not sit and day dream instead of working.  Try and stay focused and if you struggle too long and you cannot finish the work, make a note that you can ask your teacher the next day and not get behind.  Do not just give up and decide 'Tough luck, I do not understand it.'

It does not mean that if you need help from your parents, friends or teacher that there is something wrong with you.  It just means that you maybe missed something or just need to be reminded again of the steps.

If you do not ask because you are scared of the teacher or that your friends will tease you, you are being unfair to yourself and you are giving the power to move forward to other people.

It is not nice being teased, but will your rather stay behind because you are more worried about what others think?

You will be so much happier if you actually understand your work and will be more confident in doing your homework so the 'bullies' will not even matter.

The art and science of asking questions is the source of all knowledge. Thomas Berger

Understand that we all make mistakes and that is the way we learn.  It is not the end of the world if you tried and got the answers wrong.

The mistake would be if you do not try at all and you just give up.  By making mistakes we will learn and remember and next time you can do it easier and better.

If you are having problems at school or with your work, speak to your parents or teacher.  Do not just keep quiet and 'suffer in silence', because this will put a lot more stress on you or you will become so frustrated that you just give up and at the end you will then maybe have to repeat a grade.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with asking someone for help.

This does not mean be lazy and let your parents do your projects or homework for you.  They are done with school and what will you learn if somebody else always does the work for you?

Another way in which you can help yourself in concentrating and getting your work done is doing it with a friend.  You can help one another to understand the parts the other one does not know and also to motivate one another to concentrate and get it done.

The most important thing to remember is not to stop trying, that it is fine to work at your own pace, it is not a competition so see you are done first and if you do not understand, ask somebody so that you do not get further behind.
