Trash Talk with @patrice will be hosted on the SteemStar Network Tuesday 12 am UTC

I was finally convinced to host an hour show covering abuse topics. I'll also answer questions from the community about @steemcleaners & @spaminator. The name for the show is tentative. I'm not completely sold on it yet!

Join me this Tuesday, February 6th!

@mack-bot Appeals

Like @cheetah I am instituting an appeals process for @mack-bot. If you believe you have been added to the blacklist by mistake or wish to be removed you can appeal in the @steemcleaners Discord #steemitabuse-appeals. Each account only gets one 'get out of jail free' card. Repeat offenders will not be removed from the blacklist.

@steemcleaners Chat Servers

Discord

I spent yesterday cleaning up the @steemcleaner Discord channels as many of them just became places to spam complaints. I created the channel #timeout and the role @timeout for those who have been removed from other channels for bad behavior. I almost named it the-dog-house after I used a new account named @mack-bot to test my permissions. 🐶

steemit.chat

I am still on steemit.chat, just not as often. I check in two or three times a day. If something is urgent I suggest contacting me on Discord as I also have it setup on my mobile phone.

Slack

@steemcleaners now has a private slack. I have to admit I love it. Well, with the exception of my addition of busybot who seems to like ensuring my task list is never ending! I'm also looking at ClickUp. If anyone uses productivity apps in slack and has suggestions for small teams I would appreciate the advice! I need to pick one soon to use.

Anyx, Cheetah, and Steemcleaners: witness update -- Running into limits!

If you missed it, check out @anyx's latest witness update.

We have also recently hired a Web+DB Developer to redesign our website, steemcleaners.org.

Some great things are getting done behind the scenes for @steemcleaners and @spaminator with the help of @anyx who founded @steemcleaners.

@cheetah

My favorite furry friend (don't tell @zoee I said that!) seems to have gotten some bad press recently. She plays two roles in the community. The first is her blacklist where she comments to inform the community of bad actors.

The second is to let the community know when she finds copied content. She does not call the person in question a plagiarist. There are many reasons that @cheetah will comment on a perfectly good post. The most common is when members of the community run contests or curation posts that have the same sentences, phrases, or paragraphs as previous posts.

If you are a curator, take the time to read @cheetah's comment and the response from the contributor. The contributor might have just had the bad luck of having cheetah catch a sentence he properly quoted and sourced.

If you are a contributor and receive a comment from cheetah for something you copied, just respond to her. Let the community know in a brief sentence why you received the comment.

  • Thanks @cheetah! But I already pointed out the source.
  • Thanks @cheetah.. Here's some catnip, Thanks for dropping a link to a previous contest

If @cheetah's link is way off base, feel free to contact me to have the comment changed. I, however, will not change comments where @cheetah's link is or was correct.

If you don't agree with how @cheetah works, contact her owner @anyx.

@spaminator

I have someone using the @spaminator account to comment on human comment spam reports from the community as well as #introduceyourself tag spam generated through queries two or three times a week, sometimes more. I hope to have her here more (she actually comes to my house) when the weather is less crappy. She's also a wonderful person and I hope she'll one day get more involved with the community beyond reading my posts, moral support and helping out.

The comments have met with mixed results with the majority being positive. Lots of community members are replying in a way that indicates to me they didn't understand the use of the tag or that their comments could be seen as spam. I haven't had a chance to follow up yet and see if this has actually changed their posting or comment habits.

Mistakes & Intolerance

"to err is human" as the old proverb goes. What I find disheartening is that there are those in the community that are so intolerant of mistakes made by others in the community. Whether the mistake is made by an individual community member or a community project take the time to consider that we are all human and mistakes happen. Doesn't matter if we've been here on steemit for 5 minutes or 2 years.

Comment Spam

Before lashing out at others with a negative comment or flag. Take the time to look at their comments and posts. Is this the only time the curator left the comment "Great post!" in the last 24 hours? Do they have just a few comments in the last couple of days? Maybe they don't know what to say, maybe they are short on time and think you would appreciate knowing they liked it, or maybe they don't speak English and think they are being supportive.

If you don't have the time to take a look and they are not a constant nuisance consider saying "Hey bud, your comments look like spam!"

Community Projects

@spaminator commented on a report from the community on an account that was reportedly spamming generic comments. Those comments were replies on his own post to his curators. While I don't agree that the two accounts should have been reported and shouldn't have been commented on, mistakes happen.

If there is a mistake made by a member of the @steemcleaners or @spaminator team we are happy to edit the comment and rectify the mistake.

If someone has made a mistake with a comment or flag, try contacting them or leaving a comment for them to sort the situation out. I don't know about the rest of the community but I don't want to deal with someone who is uncivil or harasses me long after the situation has been rectified.

@steemcleaners & @spaminator comments are left by a human

The comments are left by a human, not a bot, using templates.

The frequent misconception makes me want to set up a bot with a comment like:

I'm a bot! You've been reported to @spaminator or @steemcleaners by a fellow member of the community for comment spam. Those who see your comments as spam may flag/downvote your comments resulting in a loss of reputation and rewards.

It might be less of a headache.

Witness Server

I've been asked a few times about my server... It's running smoothly. I've missed 2 (+1 from an old server in 2016 for a total of 3) blocks since it was brought online. The last one was on 11/29/2017. Depending on my ranking I produce between 8 & 14 blocks per day.

I'm currently #60. Last month I lost some ground due to proxy shuffling. @abit decided to proxy his votes to @smooth. This happens upon occasion with witness ranks. It is one of those strange situations where a witness doesn't have votes removed but does loose ground.

Someone in chat pointed out that I must be a "bad" witness go from the mid 50's down to 74 in one day. I don't view it that way. I never had @smooth's vote, so I never lost it. @abit for his own reasons decided to proxy his vote to someone he trusts.

Losing a witness vote or proxy shuffling doesn't always equate to someone disagreeing with or disproving of a witnesses actions or project project involvement. Sometimes they just think there is a better candidate to vote for. Last year @netuoso removed his witness vote from me in favor of @utopia-io which is a great project IMO. It's tough picking out just 30 witnesses some times when there are so many good candidates to choose from.
