Criminal groups and bitcoin

A recently published European Commission report says that crypto-currencies are relatively rarely used by organized criminal groups.

There have been several studies on virtual currencies, which, apparently, are rarely used by criminal groups. Although they [virtual currencies] have a high level of anonymity, their circulation is limited by the high technologies underlying them.

Thus, according to the European Commission, crypto-currencies are not so popular among criminal elements due to the fact that not everyone knows how to use them.

Also, the authors of the document argue that the lack of regulation of this industry in the EU creates barriers to monitoring of crypto-currency transactions. The report, in particular, says that one of the possible directions of regulation can be the creation of user databases of crypto-currencies, as well as the corresponding purse addresses.

Soon the European Commission will prepare a new report, which will specify the proposals for regulating the crypto industry and countering the use of digital currencies in criminal activities.
