Are you trying to circumvent a firewall so you can watch sports at work?

Do you want to research a competitor without any trace of you researching them?

Is some jack@ss blocking your favorite website?

Then it's time to consider Orbot, the proxy app. This app is great for people who want a truly private internet connection -- activists in censored countries, whistleblowers, people who are cheating on their spouses or doing insider trading. Just kidding! This app is not meant to enable cheating or fraudulent activities, sheesh!

Internet freedom and privacy is no joke

In my review today I am going to get serious and focus on something important for internet users -- not just the UX and UI of shopping apps and coupon apps, like I did in the past. Those are fine too but internet freedom and privacy is so important that I am going to get serious for a moment.

Orbot uses Tor, a project dedicated to protecting against the kind of network surveillance that threatens people's personal freedom and privacy.

No tracking. No censorship.

Orbot is a free proxy app that lets people use the internet more securely. By stripping away the identifying details about you and making you look more like everyone else that uses Tor, surveillance networks (and targeted ads!) have less and less information.

How it works

Tor encrypts its network traffic and then hides it -- sometimes known as "obfuscation" -- by bouncing the traffic through a series of computers around the world. This also helps protect activists and whistleblowers who need anonymity to do their work.

According to the video from The Tor Project (linked below), Tor uses 3 layers of protection and then passes your traffic through several voluntarily-operated servers located across the globe.

State-sponsored attacks and state censorship are a common threat, and this type of proxy sitting on top of a network like Tor makes it much harder for the attackers to get the information they want.

My favorite feature:

  • Built-in VPN (as you would expect) lets you access a variety of apps in VPN Mode. Yes, Facebook is a Tor-Enabled app!

For added security and privacy, use this app on top of Orfox:

"the most anonymous way to access any website".

The downside is the process of connecting to your desired site might take a little longer, but if you want the strongest privacy and identity protection available today, it's an acceptable tradeoff.

UX and UI Comments

This app has a wonderful visual design with appropriate and effective usage of colors and styles.
The controls are easy to use and intuitive, and matches Android 4.0+ "ux language" pretty well.
I give this app 5 stars for its goal and execution ⚛⚛⚛⚛⚛

Here is a wonderful video about the Tor Project that everyone can understand:
