Loading operating systems from removable devices are quite common. Knoppix is one such bootable operating system that can be directly booted from a CD/DVD or a USB stick. Though Knoppix was primarily designed for a bootable CD drive, it was then used as a live operating system that can be used both from CD as well as a removable USB stick. This can even be stored in the hard drive and can be booted from there.
The website has documentation on how this can be used. The documentation is available both in German as well as English.
