BUET was established in the late nineteenth century as a survey school for the surveyors. In 1876 the then British government started an institution named Dhaka Survey School. Its purpose was to provide technical education for employees of British government employees at that time. In 1905 Khwaja Ahsanullah of Dhaka was interested in this school and donated 1.12 lakhs rupees for the development of Muslim education. In his great contribution, it was later promoted as a self-contained engineering education and in 1908 as its recognition, the university was named as Ahsanullah Engineering School. Ahsanullah Engineering School started with a three-year diploma course in Civil Engineering, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. At the beginning the activities of the school are in a rented building. In 1906, its own building was constructed near the Shahidullah Hall of Dhaka University in the government initiative.
