The Founders of Steem stated that shareholders of user-generated content have created billions of dollars from social media companies.
Following the model that Reddit started in 2014, by giving back to everyone who contributed to Reddit by performing some of the popular actions that are used on Steemit to earn cryptocurrency among other things. Those popular actions are posting, commenting, and voting.
On Steemit, however you are rewarded with cryptocurrency. That cryptocurrency is called Steem and Steem Dollars.
