The Lion Dance (2018), drawing involved both analogue and digital technique of drawing.

Analogue vs. Digital - Why not both?

Its always been a big dilemma to most artist to choose sides; first choice, you are the conservative all analogue who sketch and paint on textured hard grain paper with watercolour or using oil paints on fine canvas. Or the second choice, to be the tech savvy artist who go all out on online tutorial on figuring out the type of brushes presets suits well to your style.

  • The magical touch of analogue drawings.

Its been said that to go all digital takes a long time for an artist to adapt, especially those who have always been with the traditional method of drawing for years, they will find that it’s a tiring process to relearn everything from scratch, or even need to unlearn what they have known. Master artists and craftsmen have been developing fine arts processes for thousands of years, working with a vast range of mediums to create work of arts. These processes for some have been their work of life, making the attachment inseparable and changes are not a preferred choice.

Digital drawings required a whole new set of technique to get to their own existing expectation as programmers and software developers are yet to successfully depict 100% of the behaviour of the actual real material in their programmes. The actual feels of drawing with the artist’s ‘real’ strokes on paper are always the most popular reason an artist rejected the idea of moving into digital drawing technique as it will effect the quality and expectation of the outcome for them. For example, to draw on the tablet while looking at the cursor on the screen instead of where we are drawing is always the biggest challenge to create a drawing, ending up to a solution of having the sketch the usual way on paper, and then scan it to work on colouring it digitally. This method is lengthy and tedious, where it effected the productivity of creating the work, thus some who can afford will choose to invest on the expensive Wacom Cyntiq to cut down some steps, however drawing on slippery screen still did not do the justice.

  • Versatility of digital drawings.

However, one thing we have to agree that both sides do carry their own merits. The advancement of technology has allowed us to technically go beyond what we have been achiving for the past centuries. These have been done through the simplification of those processes mention into the realm which are more accessible to the artists. Artist nowadays no longer need to have to rent their own painting studio, or get their hands dirty mixing paints to get the colour they imagined. They can also change and experiment on any mediums at will concurrently to explore on mixing the medias. And these digital drawings outcome are so versatile they are transferable to any surfaces of any sizes.

Lenovo Yoga Book have introduced the perfect platform for artists to get the best of both worlds through the latest technology of its kind. The technology of incorporating ‘’Wacom Feels’’ technology with the “Real Pen’’ have made a total breakthrough on the practicality of creating a digital artwork.

Introducing the LENOVO YOGA BOOK.

The process..

The basic drawing was drawn on a Bockingford watercolour sketchbook, on top of the Yoga Book which recorded concurrently on the sketchbook as well as in the device. Yes, the 'Real Pen' of the device lets you to draw on your sketchbook while digitizing it, no matter how thick is your sketchbook, cool huh? :)

After finishing the basic drawing i started to go all digital on colouring the artwork.Notice that i dont even need to take the hassle to scan my sketch and the digitized version of drawing can be recorded in the software for a timelapse video. Playing with layers and blending options, the drawing was done in just about 30 minutes and can straight-away be uploaded for seasons greetings!

In the other hand, have also put a lil dash of quick colour on the original drawing on rough grain Bockingford watercolour paper just for the fun of it. :)
