Hi Steem-Cartoon

I am back! In Malay it sounds like (ayam baik) which means 'good chicken'. Anyway this community is starting to grow. A good balance between reflection and sharing of art. It isn't about finding out who is best but to grow a community on this platform by sharing ideas and spreading education along the way.

It is such a breath of fresh air when we see young talent coming onto the platform. Sometimes I wonder where they get their techniques from. These are not conventional ways of drawing but they are definitely very interesting and unique. To mention a few @elliebong, @hanbun, @akmalbastamam, @rehanrhapsody and @afique.

To those relics from the past generation like myself, @sireh, @rambai, @aurah, @cartoonistlambok, @orenisme, @petai, @chendol, @aie and Abang Mie are so relieved to see these young young talents at work bringing new style and concept to the field. Salute!

My Current Post

I usually work on tight datelines because editors and publishers must ensure that their contents are published on time. I have to collect the artwork from all the cartoonists and prepare their schedule. Our magazine is printed on a monthly basis. It has to be printed and delivered to the market before the end of the month.

That is how my world turns. Datelines after datelines. But I am a pretty tough guy, datelines don't make me cry. It just make my stomach twist. Our magazine is called 'BEKAZON'. 'Beka' in the Malaysian context means discussion or chat and 'zon' means zone. We try to combine all Malaysian talent in one publication. We want to build a generation of creative individuals and a place to showcase cartoon and comic talents.

The market is going strong but the printed magazine is struggling because it does not a market as big as the ones in Japan.

The Process

Rough sketch and inking.

Bringing in the details and lightings.

Balancing the shadows.

Done. Use photoshop to cut the rough edges and give it a presentable look.

Old School

I am conservative. I still use paper and pen and do not rely on Wacom for drawing. No offence, but I do this to control my strokes and give the less perfect dynamic lines that I want. I can't do that with computer tools rite? Furthermore the texture on real paper is more satisfying and it feeds my desire. I have done some digital work and you have seen it but it is more of a personal preference anyway. Afterall, I am old school rocker.

As for my personal collection, I like to draw nature and deep jungle scenes. Everyone have their niche. For my personal sketch book, I am more into drawing the greens. In my earlier days, I am into metal music and my art is full of skulls, gothic stuff and anger. I think I will scare my kids if I do such art now. Heh! I am slowing down and trying new stuff.

This is me working..

Till we meet again,

Hasta la vista baby!
