The Ghana international has made public his decision to quit international football. This, he said, is to give way for the younger generation.

Michael Essien has been playing for the black Stars for 12 years. He was part of the team from Ghana that played their first ever world cup in 2006.

Essien also played for Chelsea during Mourinho's first era as a Chelsea coach.

He was one of those that were accused of spearheading that the players be paid appearance fee alongside Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sulley Muntari. He maintained his stance that he did no wrong.

He has told *GHOne TV that he wouldn't respond to any call to play for the national team as he's officially retired, even before the 2014 world cup in Brazil.
