The Mets selected Brett Baty with their first pick in the 2019 draft.

After signing him below slot, the team assigned him to the Gulf Coast League to start his professional career. To say that it was a terrific first week is an understatement.

Two weeks after handing him $3.9 million, which was below slot, the team is now promoting Baty to Kingsport in the Appalachian League.

Baty played 5 games for the GCL Mets, putting up a stat line of .350/.480/.650. He had one homerun (a grand slam), drove in 8 and had 5 walks.

Overall, an impressive first week.

The 19 year old was an "older" senior which led many to believe he will rise quickly through the Mets system. He was drafted as a third baseman although some speculate he could end up as a left fielder.

His bat is his best tool with many raving about the power. It was said that the Mets got the best high school bat in the draft. This follows up their selections in recent years of Dominic Smith and Michael Conforto. Smith was considered the best H.S. bat in 2013 while Conforto was deemed the best college bat in 2014.

Both are not productive in the major leagues.

Here is a video of his first professional HR.
